Artisan - Kyuubei Sagara

This Chawan is now available on our Etsy store:

This ‘Shigaraki-Yaki’ Matcha Chawan was hand made by Artisan Kyuubei Sagara at his own ‘Kayano’ kiln in Shigaraki.

Shigaraki ware dates back to the 12th century and the Shigaraki kiln is recognised as one of the ‘Six Old Kilns’ in Japan. Shigaraki town is located in Southern Shiga Prefecture, close to the borders of Kyoto and Nara, and neighbours the Uji tea growing region.

Shigaraki ware is made with sandy clay from close by Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, which gives it it’s distinctive warm orange colour. It features a natural aesthetic and irregular contours, as well as beautiful glazes that are often transparent and glass like, with bluish and greenish colourings.

Size (Approx): Height 85mm / Diameter 105mm

Having just enjoyed some matcha in my Kyuubei Sagara chawan, obtained from Koto Tea earlier this summer, I felt obliged to provide a review. The chawan is very unique, sitting low, on an almost invisible kodai. Its colours and texture reminiscent of a lobster: a nubbly, feldsparic surface marked with splashes of deep blue, subtle green, and intense, fiery red. A sure way to augment any tea experience. Thank you Koto Tea!
